Externship Program
CVMF is dedicated to enriching veterinary student education through its Veterinary Student Support. Veterinary students need experience beyond their academic work to become better veterinarians. These experiences live on in the practice of veterinary medicine in each veterinarian, touching the lives of thousands of animals.

Every year, CVMF hosts fourth-year veterinary students from Colorado State University for two-week rotations to participate in an externship designed to provide hands-on experience with Harrison Memorial Animal Hospital’s experienced veterinarians and technical staff.

During their two-week externship, students are given the opportunity to perform spay and neuter surgeries, assist in general surgeries and procedures, and perform various diagnostics such as reading x-rays, ultrasounds, and lab results. Students hone their skills in obtaining adequate histories, performing physical examinations, and formulating a directed, concise diagnostic and therapeutic plan for their patients. Students learn to be comfortable with animal handling and restraint, simple anesthetic and surgical procedures, performing radiographic procedures, and recognizing infectious diseases. Students also learn to communicate well with clients, veterinarians, technicians and other staff.

CVMF helps the veterinary students gain a better understanding of not-for-profit veterinary medicine and how not-for-profit hospitals, such as Harrison Memorial, influence and contribute to the communities they serve while providing quality care to pet owners with financial need.

CVMF is pleased to have the opportunity to educate future veterinarians, as well as provide them with invaluable experiences to further their careers and broaden their horizons.

Internship Opportunities
An internship at Harrison Memorial Animal Hospital allows students to put all of their classroom and laboratory instruction to use in an actual veterinary setting, receiving hands-on, real-world experience.

Harrison Memorial is a state-of-the-art facility staffed by highly qualified veterinarians and board certified technicians who provide a wide range of high-quality service and work to ensure students receive clinical experience in a variety of areas to gain practical experience. We work with interns and externs on a regular basis, teaching them the skills necessary to start their successful careers.

Give Back to the Community
Interning at Harrison Memorial is more than just a chance to apply what you have learned–it is also a chance to give back to the community. Harrison Memorial is the only not-for-profit hospital in the Denver metro area dedicated to providing affordable veterinary services to low and fixed income pet owners. Professional care for a sick or injured animal can easily run into the hundreds or even thousands of dollars. The people who come to Harrison Memorial usually have nowhere else to go for veterinary care of their beloved pet.

Pain Management
We offer a complete pain management protocol to ensure that each patient is comfortable during procedures and surgery recovery, and we follow up with clients to address any concerns or questions they may have during their first few days at home.

AAHA-accredited
The hospital and its programs are fully accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA).

Send a Student to Convention
We provide scholarship opportunities for education beyond the students’ academic work. These scholarships provide opportunities to attend the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association’s (CVMA) annual convention and periodic conferences, providing access to numerous training modules and personal access to CVMA’s 2,200 plus members.

Pets and Vets/Got Pets!
This is our interactive educational program that involves children ages 9 and older in animal health and welfare. The program focuses on involving them in animal health and welfare awareness and in exploring the veterinary medical field. Their learning includes an educational tour of our Harrison Memorial Animal Hospital with a demonstration from hospital medical staff on the different types of procedures that they perform for animals. Medical staff share information about spaying and neutering and how important it is to animals in their community. They are also engaged on a variety of animal welfare topics that educate them about heartworm, flea, and tick prevention and basic animal wellness and care.
