Colorado Veterinary Medical Reserve Corps
The Colorado Veterinary Medical Reserve Corps (CO VMRC) and the Colorado Veterinary Medical Reserve Corps- West (COVMRC-W) provide veterinary professionals and animal emergency responders with the training and credentialing necessary to support animal health and public health emergency response.
The CO VMRC and COVMRC-W are Medical Reserve Corps Unit under the Colorado Medical Reserve Corps program and are supported by a broad multi-agency partnership. CO VMRC and COVMRC-W may be deployed in one of three general ways:
1. By local emergency management to provide veterinary and animal emergency response support during emergency situations.
2. By the State Veterinarian during an animal health emergency or other state-level incident where veterinary and animal response personnel are needed.
3. By the Unit Coordinator to support a planned event where service animals are utilized and are in need of care.
The COVMRC-W primarily includes the counties and tribal areas west of the Continental Divide and the San Luis Valley.
Individuals interested in joining CO VMRC or COVMRC-W should first complete the IS 100b (Incident Command System) and IS 700a (National Incident Management System) web classes through the FEMA Emergency Management Institute. These classes prepare participants for understanding the framework under which animal response operates.
FEMA Certificates of Completion for IS 100 and 700 should be submitted along with the CO VMRC Application and COVMRC Volunteer Release to the Animal Emergency Management Program Director.
Individuals must complete the CO VMRC Introductory Training. The training series includes four basic training modules that are offered periodically in seminar format or can be completed on-line (see below). Topics include:
1. Introduction to Animal Emergency Management for Veterinary Professionals
2. Bio-Defense and Zoonoses
3. Overview of CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive) Threats
4. Personal Preparedness and Business Contingency Planning
